Senator Fuschillo Joins Cablevision In Teaching Students About Internet Safety

Charles J. Fuschillo Jr.

State Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (8th Senate District) and Assemblyman David McDonough (19th Assembly District) recently joined with Cablevision in teaching Seaford High School seniors about the importance of being smart while using the Internet.

“Teenagers use the Internet for a wide variety of reasons, especially to communicate with their friends, but they need to know the risks of posting certain types of information or photos on the Internet. This information can be seen by almost anyone, including college admissions offices, perspective employers, and even criminals,” said Senator Fuschillo. “Through the use of interactive technology, students were able to learn about the dangers of posting information online as well as talk to experts about how they can protect themselves.”

Senator Fuschillo urged students to be careful about the information they send out over the Internet and told them how identity thieves use the Internet to obtain an individual’s personal information to commit crime. He also told them about his own experiences as an identity theft victim. Assemblyman McDonough and John Bickham, Cablevision’s President of Cable & Communications, also spoke to the students about the need to be “Internet Smart.”

Students were then able to use teleconferencing technology to speak with Stephen Treglia, Chief of the Technology Crime Unit of the Nassau County District Attorney’s office and George Justice, Assistant Dean for Admissions at Touro Law Center, about the potential repercussions of living in the digital age and the implications their actions can have on their lives.

Cablevision’s “Power to Learn Internet Smarts” program provides a forum for teachers and parents to work with children on appropriate and safe Internet usage. Online, interactive case studies explore important topics in Internet use at school and at home, allowing students to examine issues affecting schoolwork, class papers, entertainment activities and online safety.
