Senator Aubertine Calls For The Return Of Snowmobile Funds
Sweep of dedicated fund will short change trail maintenance and development
WATERTOWN—The recent decision to pluck $1 million from the Snowmobile Trail Development Fund was inappropriate and the office should make every attempt to return these funds, according to a letter sent by state Sen. Darrel J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent) to Laura L. Anglin, budget director in the state Division of the Budget .
This is a dedicated fund and the money came directly from the snowmobilers to maintain the trails they use," Sen. Aubertine said. "That money wasn’t raised by the general public. It shouldn’t be used in the general fund."
In his April 28 letter to the Division of the Budget, Sen. Aubertine wrote that the removal of $1 million raised by registration fees for snowmobile enthusiasts will short change the trail fund, impacting its ability to begin trail work early next season. He pointed out that the fund had a balance of about $7 million, with $6.25 million already committed to trail maintenance from this past season.
"I’d like to see the budget office reconsider this transfer" Sen. Aubertine said. "I understand that the Division of the Budget may have the authority to do this and it may be necessary from time to time, but this is a limited and unique fund that should not be left short for next season."
