Seward: Prop Tax Rebates Coming
ALBANY, 9/15/08 -- Property tax rebates will be mailed out beginning this month and into October, and Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) urged area homeowners who didn't receive checks last year to apply this year.
"I have heard from some constituents that they didn't receive checks last year," Seward said. "They should be sure to apply this year."
Applicants may apply online at http://www.nystax.gov.
"While the checks are helpful and reduce what people have to come up with to pay school taxes this fall, more needs to be done to bring property taxes under control and provide genuine, permanent property tax relief," Seward said. "In August, the senate met and I voted for a property tax cap . At the same time, we approved several mandate relief measures for local schools. We also need to look at the 'circuit breaker' and ways we can reform the property tax system."
Those who applied and received last year's rebates and whose property information has remained the same in 2008 do not need to reapply. Checks will be issued automatically.
Property owners who did not apply in 2007 and those whose information has changed during the year must apply. Applications will be mailed these homeowners or they can apply online.
Eligible senior citizens will receive their checks automatically.
"Seniors checks will be up 40 percent this year to help our seniors stay in their homes," Seward said. "There's more work to be done in reducing property taxes, and that's my priority."
Those applying this year must do so by December 31, 2008.
