Saland Announces Availability Of Grants

Stephen M. Saland

Senator Steve Saland (R,I,C Poughkeepsie) today announced the NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) has released the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5310 Grant Program application and workshop schedule for Federal Fiscal Year 2008. The Section 5310 Program provides not-for-profit organizations and municipalities assistance in the purchase of vehicles to meet the transportation needs of elderly individuals and individuals with disabilities. The program allows eligible organizations to purchase vehicles and be reimbursed 80% of the cost.

"In order to maintain their independence, elderly and disabled individuals often need help with transportation", said Senator Saland. "They may be unable to drive themselves to the doctor or the grocery store but taking a taxi or public transportation is not an option. An elderly person may need to see a medical specialist whose office is 30 miles away -- a taxi ride might be too expensive and public transportation may not be available. A disabled person may have special transportation needs that a taxi or public transportation simply may be unable to accommodate."

"This program is important as it provides not-for-profits and municipalities financial assistance to purchase vehicles for local programs which provide transportation services. I would urge all entities who may be eligible for these funds to look into this program," Saland concluded.

Applications for the program are due June 1, 2008. For more details, including an application and a schedule of workshops to assist applicants, please click on the link below or call the Section 5310 Program at 518-457-8335 to request an application.
