STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — As of Friday, Oct. 20, the intersection of Clove Road and Van Cordlandt Avenue in Sunnyside will forever be etched with the name Jim Romano, the legendary freelance photographer who passed away on Jan. 22, 2023 at age 94.
Because of the legacy Romano left behind, longtime friends, RoseAnn and Joe McAllister, vice president and president of The South Beach Civic Association, respectively, brought the idea of the street renaming proposal to city Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks in hopes of having it approved by the City Council.
In addition to Hanks, the impressive ceremony to honor a man who was loyal to his craft included, Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon, Vito Fossella Sr., Alba Rivera, Cara Buonincontri of Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis’s office, Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton, former Assemblyman Michael Cusick, Assemblyman Sam Pirozzolo, Assemblyman Michael Tannousis’s Chief of Staff, Ian Yanda, a representative from the office of Assemblyman Charles Fall, Romano’s son, Ron Romano, Romano’s niece, Anita Romano-Borovilas and her two children, Joe and Christina, Ken Mitchell, executive director of the Staten Island Zoo and John “Mr. Democrat” Sollazzo.
