Heartbreaking stories fuel fight for medical aid in dying in New York

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Advocates have been pushing for New York state to pass medical aid in dying legislation for several years.

Will 2025 be the year it finally passes? Staten Island state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton sure hopes so.

According to Scarcella-Spanton, the measure’s prime co-sponsor, the proposed bill will be reintroduced “without a shadow of a doubt” come the new session in January.

In late fall, Scarcella-Spanton appeared on Merit Street Network’s “Dr. Phil Primetime” with Dr. Phil McGraw to again call on New Yorkers — and all Americans — to support medical aid in dying.

“People support it, and we just need to get more people to understand this is not something controversial,” she previously told the Advance/SILive.com.
