Staten Island officials honor 17 Black educators for ‘their passion, dedication and commitment to our students’

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — In celebration of Black History Month, state Sen. Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/Southern Brooklyn) and Councilwoman Kamillah Hanks (D-North Shore) hosted a special event honoring Black educators throughout the North Shore of Staten Island.
These educators, mentors and advocates were recognized for their dedication to student success, both academically and personally, as leaders, citizens and individuals.
“We have countless Black educators in my district, and this year, I wanted to make sure they received some recognition for all their commitment to their students,” said Scarcella-Spanton. “Education is about more than the traditional learning that happens in a classroom -- it’s the moments when students connect with a mentor that help them see their future in a new light.”
