State Senator Cathy Young (R,I,C - Olean) today dedicated Route 19 between Scio and Wellsville in Allegany County as the "William C. Hennessy Memorial Highway" in honor of the late Commissioner William C. Hennessy. Commissioner Hennessy, a native son of Scio and a graduate of Wellsville Central High School, served as Commissioner of the Department of Transportation from 1977 to 1982.
"Commissioner Hennessy was an ardent supporter of Allegany County and made certain that Allegany County concerns were well represented in Albany," said Senator Young. "The "William C. Hennessy Memorial Highway" is a fitting tribute to the memory of Commissioner William C. Hennessy."
"Speaking for the entire Hennessy Family, we all feel a great deal of pride and excitement in having this state roadway named in honor of my brother Bill, a dedicated public servant and respected leader who worked tirelessly toward impressive results while serving the people of Allegany County and the State of New York with honor, excellence and distinction for over three decades," said Tom Hennessy.
"It is only fitting that we gather here today to memorialize and dedicate this portion of Route 19 in Allegany County as the William C. Hennessy Memorial Highway for such a devoted and professional public servant," said Giglio. "This memorial highway will serve as a reminder for residents of Allegany County and all New Yorkers of the contributions of William Hennessy for generations to come."
