Larkin Cosponsors Bill To Punish Those Who Buy Alcohol For Minors
William J. Larkin Jr.
January 31, 2006
Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) is cosponsoring legislation (S.6530) in the New York State Senate that would create additional penalties for anyone who purchases alcohol for young people under the age of twenty-one.
"This legislation sends a strong message to people who would buy alcohol for minors," said Senator Larkin. "Not only would they suffer a heavy fine, but they would risk losing their own license as well. It is just one more way to try to prevent senseless accidents, injuries or worse."
In addition to a heavy fine, the bill would impose the following penalties:
Six months suspension of a driver’s license for a first violation.
One-year for a second violation, or subsequent violations.
Current law imposes a fine of $200, and or imprisonment for up to five days.
Anyone whose license is suspended in such a case would have to appeal to the courts for a restricted use license.
