Senator Alesi Helps to Pass Leandra's Law

James S. Alesi

December 21, 2009

As one of the strongest advocates of discouraging drunk driving, Senator Alesi helped to pass Leandra's Law, which creates a new crime of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated with a child as a passenger.  Senator Alesi was the sponsor of  New York State’s toughest repeat offender DWI laws.

“While I am saddened that it took the death of a child to make a bill like Leandra's Law a reality, I am honored to be a part of this historic legislation.” Senator Alesi stated. “I am encouraged that this law goes a step further to ensuring the safety of minors by requiring all individuals convicted of misdemeanor and felony DWI offenses to install and maintain an ignition interlock device in their vehicle."
