(Yonkers- NY) On Thursday, February 18th Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, in partnership with the Municipal Housing Authority of Yonkers, held a kick off event for “Just About Me” (J.A.M.), a program created to address the unique issues facing young women in the municipal housing community.
During the two-hour event, the Senator led a discussion with the audience to gather feedback on event proposals and to find ways the program could provide valuable information on topics that interest women in the community. Each month, J.A.M. events will enable participants to receive advice from local experts as well as attend social and cultural events in the region.
“The Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers is thrilled that State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins had decided to fund the ‘Just About Me’ program here at Cottage Place Gardens. It reflects her continued concern for our residents and more specifically our female residents,” said Paula Crawford of the Municipal Housing Authority. “The Authority and its Board of Commissioners recognizes the importance of providing programs such as this one to our residents. Public housing cannot be just about buildings and property management. It also has to be about enabling our residents to reach their potential and contributing to the larger community.”
“I have enjoyed working with the Municipal Housing Authority to design a program that both inspires and informs women about ways to achieve success in their personal and professional lives,” said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “I would also like to applaud FFAWN and the Mary J. Blige Foundation for their participation and willingness to provide additional financial and logistical support to facilitate future J.A.M. events.”
“The Mary J. Blige Center for Women, a partnership between WJCS and FFAWN, are extremely proud to be a part of the J.A.M. program. We look forward to hosting some of the workshops at our center. We’re grateful for Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins who is dedicated to helping women in our community,” said Michelle Hammett, Director of The Mary J. Blige Center
