Senate Republican Leader Dean G. Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) recently honored Magaly Polo, community leader from Elmont, as his 2010 Woman of Distinction.  Magaly was honored with other notable women from across the state on May 25, 2010 in Albany.

“I am proud to honor Magaly Polo as my 2010 Woman of Distinction,” said Senator Skelos.  “Magaly is a pillar within the community of Elmont and has worked tirelessly to help others and to improve the quality of life for all residents of Elmont.”

Magaly is an exceptional woman dedicated to her family and her community.  She is a loving mother of two children whose commitment to her family and community is second to none.  Magaly spends her professional career as a social worker helping those with learning and developmental disabilities acquire basic living skills.  She assists in developing life plans for those in need and through her career and volunteer work has touched the lives of countless people challenged with disabilities.

As a trained Red Cross Disaster Mental Health worker, Magaly provided her skills to those in need immediately following the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti.  After seeing the destruction in the news, Magaly departed for Haiti to help those in need.  She spent thirty days assisting those in need helping her fellow Haitians deal with medical issues and grief among the devastation.

“Magaly now joins the ranks of women whose accomplishments within their communities serve as an example to all.  Her dedication to her community empowers and encourages young women across our state to take an active role in helping others and working to better their communities through hard work and determination.  She truly is a role model to all” said Senator Skelos

The Women of Distinction honors outstanding women from across New York State.  This program was created in 1998 to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence, or whose professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
