Larkin Slams Sales Tax Increase

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) cautions all individuals and families that a sales tax hike will soon take effect. On October 1st, New York State will begin collecting 4 percent sales tax on clothing and footwear costing $110 or less as part of the 2010-2011 state budget approved by the Democrats who control state government.

"Between the last two state budgets, both of which I voted against, taxes and fees have increased by an incredible $12 billion," said Senator Larkin. "How many more people, jobs and businesses have to leave New York before the Democrats ‘running’ this state realize that tax increases are adding to our problems, not solving them?"

The sales tax reinstatement is expected to cost New Yorkers $330 million. It was included in nearly $4 billion in new taxes approved this year so the state’s Democratic leadership could continue to spend.

Items that were formerly exempt from state sales tax that will now be subject to the 4 percent tax include: dresses, uniforms, sleepwear, coats, hats, Scout uniforms, socks and even diapers.

"Increasing taxes on hardworking, cash-strapped New Yorkers is exactly the wrong way to improve our state’s troubled economy," said Larkin. "To get New York back on the right track, state government needs to cut taxes, reduce spending, create jobs and actually attract residents and businesses here, not push them away."
