Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today announced that Merrick resident Gail Volk has been appointed to the New York State Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Advisory Board. Senator Fuschillo recommended Ms. Volk for the appointment, which was made by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

“Gail’s professional experience and passionate advocacy have made her a leader in the fight to protect people from tobacco. Her strong background will make her a valuable asset to the Board. I congratulate her on her appointment,” said Senator Fuschillo.

Gail Volk has been working to protect people from tobacco for many years. She serves as a School Tobacco Policy Specialist for Western Suffolk BOCES, helping school districts develop comprehensive tobacco policies and providing strategies to help aid in their enforcement.

Prior to that, she served as Executive Director for the Community Wellness Council of the Bellmores and Merricks, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote substance abuse prevention by fostering emotional and physical wellness. She is also a Past-President of the Child Care Council of Nassau County.

As a member of the board, Ms. Volk will be advising the State’s Health Commissioner on ways to prevent and reduce tobacco use in New York State.
