LaValle Includes Port Jefferson Repowering in Senate Budget Bill

New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle (R-C-I, Port Jefferson) said today that he has included language in the Senate’s budget bill that, similar to a bill he passed last year, would provide an incentive for the repowering of old power plants by qualifying the old power plant sites eligible for participation in the State’s brownfield clean-up program.

The Senate’s Budget resolution says:

“The Senate advances legislation to encourage the repowering of aging power plants serving Long Island through providing incentives for such repowering via the Brownfield Cleanup Program …  This measure would protect the property tax base for schools and municipalities for many communities where such plants are sited…”

“This budget bill encourages the development of a new or repowered facility in the Village of Port Jefferson and other legacy power plant sites on Long Island,” Senator LaValle said, “with  the goal of replacing existing plants and restoring them with modern, efficient power sources. We want to encourage competition and reliable, clean, low-cost energy that will benefit all Long Islanders.”

The budget language would provide an investor in the new facility with refundable development credits, cover at least 25% of cleanup and infrastructure expenses and provide up to a full property tax or PILOT rebate from the State.  Additionally the bill would make available to a developer brownfield development credits.
