Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), today is announcing that two bills he has co-sponsored in the New York State Senate, introduced to better protect our children against sexual crimes, were approved today.
S. 1541A establishes criminal penalties for sexual contact between a minor and a person in a position of trust in the first, second and third degrees. Currently, there are no additional penalties for sexual contact with a minor in such instances.
Senator Marty Golden stated, “We must put safeguards in place to protect our children every moment of every day. We must be confident that those we trust to educate, coach, and care for children are doing so properly and not, at any time, subjecting our children to sexual contact. This legislation will put in place stricter penalties so to keep our child safe.”
The Senate also passed legislation today co- sponsored by Senator Golden, a former New York City Police Officer and member of the Senate Codes Committee, S. 746B. The legislation establishes the offenses of promoting a sex offense against a child as a Class B violent felony and possessing a sex offense against a child as a Class C violent felony..
Additionally, the bill directly addresses the solicitation and/or participation, in such acts via the internet, e-mail, blog, instant message and more.
Senator Golden continued, “We can’t ignore the fact that we must protect our children from exploitation and harm which could be found on the internet and through electronic means. Just as we must protect our children from predators in and around parks, playgrounds and schools, we must enhance laws so that the electronic predators cannot attack and commit horrific acts.”
The bills, sponsored by Senator Majority Leader Dean G. Skelos and Senator Cathy Young respectively, were sent to the Assembly.
