Genda Sponsor Squadron Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

NEW YORK -- State Senator Daniel Squadron, the Senate sponsor of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA), released the following statement to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance:

"On this day we remember Islan Nettles and so many others who were taken too soon simply because of their identity. And we recommit ourselves to achieving full protections and equality for each and every New Yorker.

"Each tragedy is another call: New York must finally pass GENDA, in the name of all victims of hate and intolerance.

"GENDA would expand New York's hate crime laws to explicitly include crimes against transgender individuals. And it would ensure that transgender New Yorkers are protected from discrimination -- so that no one loses their job or is evicted from their home or denied basic public accommodations because of how they identify."

Earlier this week, the case against the only person charged in the death of transgender New Yorker Islan Nettles was dismissed.
