Senator Serrano Joins Elected Officials and Community Advocates In Calling for Changes to the Bronx Housing Court System

(New York, NY) – Senator José M. Serrano joined other elected officials and members of the legal services field to meet with Chief Administrative Judge of the Courts of New York State, Judge A. Gail Prudenti. The meeting provided a collaborative space for those present to advocate for changes in the Bronx Housing Court system. Senator Serrano called for key changes, ensuring that tenants know their rights and options, are treated fairly and are not unnecessarily evicted.

“Unfortunately, about 2,000 tenants go through the Bronx housing court every day and an alarming 10,966 Bronx households lost their homes,” said Senator Serrano. “Most tenants find housing court confusing and intimidating,” continued Serrano.

“However, by requiring all court personnel to wear clear and visible court IDs and providing information at a Court Resources center, tenants will have the tools to navigate through housing court effectively. Many thanks to Judge Prudenti for hearing our concerns and continuing her long-standing devotion to addressing the needs of the people," said Senator Serrano.
