SENATOR PARKER BRINGS SMILES TO STUDENTS GOING TO THE PROM
“Brooklyn Lawmaker Helps Ease Burden for Working Families with FREE dresses”
Brooklyn, NY- On Saturday, April 27th, Samuel J. Tilden High School’s cafeteria was transformed to showcase over 1,000 new and gently-used dresses donated so that hundreds of young ladies could select their ideal prom dress. The highly anticipated prom season for high school seniors is quickly approaching, and Senator Kevin Parker’s 6th Annual Free Prom Dress Giveaway helped alleviate some of the financial burden for parents looking to prepare their young ladies for this once-in-a-lifetime affair.
“Each year our sponsors help give away at least 500 free prom dresses to working families in and around my district, and we look forward to helping even more young ladies next year,” Senator Parker said. “We have a great time with this event and we are happy to help these young ladies and their families,” the Senator continued.
“My daughter really loved the quality of the dresses and we are thrilled with the dress she selected for her prom,” said Nadia, a mother of a graduating senior who walked away with a beautiful white cocktail dress with an oversized ruffled flower on one shoulder. “I am really happy Senator Parker does this event; this just saved our family a lot of money.”
Business Partners of the event included Macy’s, Lydia's Closet, Operation Prom, State Farm, Fox’s Beauty Supply and Sesame Flyers International. Volunteers were supplied by community groups like Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Alpha Mu Brooklyn Chapter), Bel-Tifi, FDNY Explorers and Opportunities For A Better Tomorrow. The event’s media partner, WBLS 107.5 FM continued their support by helping spread word about the events and by providing an on-site promotion team to keep the atmosphere lively.
Once the girls selected a dress, they moved to visit several vendor stations: make-up sessions led by Daveena Boyd; hair/wig accessories by Fox Beauty Supply and Brooklyn Style Foundation; and floral corsage options from Flowerworks. In addition, MAC, Avon and Mary Kay representatives were on hand for personal consultations with the prom goers, and Dante & Zeller Formal provided Tuxedo rental discounts. Prizes were given away throughout the day, and several young ladies won gift certificates from Fox Beauty Supply. Two lucky winners also walked away with donated gift baskets from Dr. Miracle’s hair care products and Jane Carter items donated by Z-spot Salon in Brooklyn, NY.
