Sen Squadron, AM Kavanagh, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence Issue Joint Statement on Senate Majority’s Refusal to Allow a Vote on 50-Caliber Gun Ban

NEW YORK – Senator Daniel Squadron, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, and New Yorkers Against Gun Violence released the following joint statement in response to the Senate Majority’s refusal to allow a vote on bill S2028/A3322. The 50-caliber ban is part of the legislative agenda announced by NYAGV and members of State Legislators Against Illegal Guns in January.

“It's sad and unfortunate that the Senate Majority is refusing to allow a vote on bill S2028/A3322, which would protect New Yorkers from a certain extremely powerful and deadly 50-caliber weapon. Fifty-caliber rifles can kill at distances greater than a mile and are able to penetrate body armor, light armored vehicles, helicopters, and grounded airplanes, raising serious concerns about use by terrorists. They are suitable for long-range snipers and military combat, and can serve no useful purpose for hunting or protecting one's home.

“The Senate Majority is using a procedural trick to block this common-sense public safety law. New Yorkers should not be fooled. We urge an immediate vote.”
