Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) recently awarded the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to Manhasset resident Dorothy Forte. Senator Martins presented the award to Dorothy in recognition of her many years of devoted service to helping women affected by breast cancer.

Dorothy Forte was a founding member of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, a non-profit organization founded in 1997 which has raised over $2.7 million for breast cancer research, education, and support programs. She has served the organization as a Director, Executive Vice President, and Vice President of Outreach. Dorothy also founded the Coalition’s Outreach Program, which provides support services to breast cancer patients and educational programs about breast cancer and its prevention. Additionally, Dorothy served on the New York State Breast and Cervical Cancer Detection and Education Program Advisory Council.

“Dorothy Forte has been a tireless champion for breast cancer patients. Whether it’s through raising funds, providing services and educational programs, or even just being there to lend a helping hand, she has devoted herself to helping women affected by breast cancer. She has made a difference in so many lives and it is my pleasure to award her this much deserved honor,” said Senator Martins.

The New York State Senate Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors that a New Yorker can receive. Similar to the national Congressional Gold Medal, the award is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.
