(New York, NY)- Senator Serrano hosted an episode of "Represent NYC," a weekly program produced by Manhattan Neighborhood Network (MNN), that gives local elected officials the opportunity to update the community about the issues that shape our city. As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Senator Serrano along with guest panel experts Anabella Escobar, Deputy Director of the Manhattan Family Justice Center at the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence; Maureen Curtis, Associate Vice President of the Criminal Justice Programs at Safe Horizon; and Martha Hauze, Deputy Director for Programs at Violence Intervention Program (VIP), discussed domestic violence and informed viewers about what they can do if they find themselves or someone they know in this situation, while trying to get to the root of the problem.
The problem of domestic violence is one that plagues all segments of our population, but recent high-profile cases have brought increased awareness of the need for all of us to take action. Statistics show that nationwide, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of domestic violence, which equates to nearly 20 people per minute being victims of domestic violence. In addition, so much of this insidious problem goes unreported, forcing victims to suffer in silence. Our aim is to shine a strong spotlight on this problem, so hopefully we can reduce these shocking statistics.
"The topic of domestic violence is a very important, yet troubling one. Domestic violence affects so many throughout our community and is important that we bring the difficult discussion into the open. Our panel of experts in the field of domestic violence discussed their strategies for dealing with this crisis. Many thanks to MNN, the Manhattan Justice Center at the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence, Safe Horizon and VIP Mujeres for joining me in this crucial conversation," said Senator Serrano.
