Brooklyn –State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), today is announcing that he will host two free shredding events, at both of his district offices during the month of October, to assist residents in protecting themselves against identity theft.
The shredding truck will be parked outside Senator Golden’s office at 7408-5th Avenue on Saturday, October 18th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and will be outside his satellite office located at 3604 Quentin Road the following day, Sunday, October 19th, also from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Residents are invited to bring as many personal documents as they wish to shred.
Senator Marty Golden stated, “We all have a pile of papers in our house that we hope to one day get a chance to shred. This is a great opportunity to stop by my office and get rid of those forms, bank statements, receipts and more in a safe way. Shred those papers so to make sure you have taken every precaution against the crime of identity theft.”
Recent reports indicate that identity theft affected over 13 million Americans in 2013, and is the fastest growing crime in America. Additionally, identity theft is the most reported consumer fraud complaint. Senator Golden recently published a brochure that provides useful information to prevent identity theft.
Senator Golden is the sponsor of a bill, S. 6551-A, that would require credit card companies to issue New York State residents cards enabled with smart chip technology. Senator Golden is also the sponsor of S. 6826, passed by the Senate but not the Assembly, which would increase the penalties for various levels of identity theft.
For more information on the free shredding events, or to request a copy of the pamphlet, please contact Senator Golden’s office at (718) 238-6044 or email golden@nysenate.gov.
