Legislation sponsored by Senator George Amedore to create the Amsterdam Firefighters’ Benevolent Association” was passed today in the New York State Senate.
The bill (S.3950) incorporates the association and authorizes the Fire Department to receive foreign fire insurance funds from the City. When the City Charter was recently revised, it did not include the provision for the City Treasurer to distribute the funds to the fire department. This legislation fixes that oversight and designates the Benevolent Association to receive the funds.
“The members of the Amsterdam Fire Department not only help to keep our residents safe and our neighborhoods protected, they play an integral role in the community by supporting local organizations and charitable causes,” said Senator George Amedore. “This legislation will ensure they are receiving the funds they should be, and allow them to use the funds to make improvements in the Department and the community they serve.”
"By passing this bill to create the Amsterdam Professional Firefighters’ Benevolent Association, we will be able to streamline some internal procedures that will not only benefit the fire department, but will also help us better support the Amsterdam community,” said Mike Demars, President, Amsterdam Professional Firefighers, IAFF, Loacl 2825.
The Senate gave this bill final legislative passage today. It will be sent to the governor for his consideration.
