Golden to City Officials: Call Off Brooklyn American Flag Burning Rally

Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), a member of the Senate Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, today has issued the following statement urging Mayor Bill de Blasio and City officials to prevent an American flag burning rally from taking place in Brooklyn’s historic Fort Greene Park:

“As we approach the 4th of July, the greatest City in the world cannot stand by and allow our flag to be burned in an historic park in violation of our Parks Department rules. I call upon Mayor Bill de Blasio, Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver to immediately notify the organizers, “DisarmNYPD” that their event will not go on as planned tomorrow night.

If the City allows the American Flag to be burned in Fort Greene Park, contrary to Parks rules, it will truly insult all those who have fought to defend our freedoms, our rights and our liberties. The flag of our country flies proudly throughout the world, on the Moon, and surely on the streets of Brooklyn.

I ask all who have an American Flag to place it outside their home and let’s send a message that we are proud to call the United States our home. We will not accept such acts of hatred.”

Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn has strong historical connection to the Battle of Brooklyn and the Revolutionary War. The Park is home to the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument, which houses the remains of 11,500 men and women who died on ships held captive by the British.
