Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) announced that West Seneca Public Library, Lancaster Public Library, Elma Public Library Wadsworth Library and Eagle Free Library have been awarded state aid to allow the branches to expand or make major renovations. The aid is part of a $14-million capital fund for public library construction statewide provided in the 2014 state budget.
“Many of our local public libraries are in need of renovations to better serve our communities,” Gallivan said. “Some of the buildings are unable to accommodate users with disabilities, are not energy efficient or are in need of expansion in order to accommodate growing collections and public use. These are wise investments in important community assets that benefit everyone.”
The West Seneca Public Library at 1300 Union Road will receive $439,018 for the construction of a 10,236 square foot addition. The added space will create a community living room style library.
The Lancaster Public Library will use $43,500 in state aid to expand its parking lot at 5466 Broadway to include a book drop off lane. The expanded lot will also include parking spaces to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The Elma Public Library at 1860 Bowen Road will receive $28,960 for renovation work. The project includes installation of new energy efficient windows and an emergency exit door.
In Livingston County, the Wadsworth Library at 24 Center Street in Geneseo will receive $35,983 for a major renovation project. Work will include installation of a new wood floor in the main section of the library.
The Eagle Free Library in Wyoming County will use $9,645 in state aid to replace the roof at 3413 School Street. The renovation project will also include new hutters and interior ceiling tiles.
A recent survey showed nearly half of New York’s more than one thousand public libraries are over 60 years old and in urgent need of renovation and upgrading.
