State Senator Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, released the following statement Monday in response to a State Supreme Court’s ruling that New York has met its “constitutional obligation” to provide enough school aid to eight small city school districts, including Utica:
I respect the judicial process, but I am disappointed and I disagree with this latest ruling against those school districts that are fighting for the right to their fair share of funding. This ruling should be appealed.
As I have recently stated, we still recognize and appreciate the responsibility that both the State Legislature and the Governor have to develop a better school aid funding formula that is fair, equitable and predictable. This is vital step toward New York State fulfilling its obligation to provide every student with access to a sound education.
I have already proposed legislation that would ensure adequate funding for our schools, and I am hopeful that this next legislative session will bring even more focus and momentum to finally resolve this matter in a way that serves the best interests of our children and our schools.
