Senator Amedore Secures Funding for Scholarship Program at Mohonasen High School
October 10, 2017
Senator Amedore and Mohonasen Superintendent Dr. Kathleen A. Spring today announced a new scholarship program that will allow students to obtain an Emergency Medical Technician certificate at the district’s Center for Advanced Technology (CAT) building.
Senator Amedore secured a grant of $6,000 to establish the scholarship fund and cover the tuition costs for students enrolled in the program who meet the program’s academic requirements. Students will be enrolled in two courses through Hudson Valley Community College that are being taught at the CAT building starting this fall.
“Mohonasen High School and the Center for Advanced Technology has been a leader in project-based learning to provide students with hands-on experience to make them career-ready with the skills employers are looking for,” said Senator George Amedore. “I’m so proud to partner with them on this scholarship program that will help train our next generation of first responders.”
Spring said the grant money opens up a valuable opportunity to Mohonasen students.
“If we can provide access to college credits at low or no cost, high school students who might not otherwise have considered college as an option may be inspired to do so once they have the opportunity to take a course and experience success with the support of people who they are familiar with in the high school,” said Spring. “This funding represents the positive change we can effect when we work together for the good of our students.”
After completion of the EMT Certificate in their senior year, the students will have the opportunity for admission into Hudson Valley Community College’s Medical Technician Paramedic degree program. There are currently six students participating in the program.
