Sanders Takes Midnight Tour With Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol
January 24, 2017
State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway), went on a midnight tour on Friday, January 20, 2017 with the members of the Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol. It began with a meetup outside the 101st Precinct on Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway.
"As the great parliamentarian Edmund Burke said, 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,'" Sanders recalled. "That is a sentiment we must always remember, especially when it comes to community involvement. I commend the fine members of the Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol for devoting their time and effort to protect our streets by reporting criminal behavior and working with the NYPD to ensure perpetrators are caught."
The Rockaway Nassau Safety Patrol is made up of 50 volunteers that conduct patrols in Far Rockaway and Nassau County. The group collaborates with the NYPD, specifically the 100th and 101st Precincts in the Rockaways and the 4th Precinct in Nassau County to understand the best ways to serve the community. The RNSP regularly sends out email reports to area residents to keep them informed about crime or safety issues in the neighborhoods they survey.
The group encounters a wide array of crimes on its patrols, which can range from burglaries to public lewdness. They report what they see to police, who can then follow-up and make arrests, if necessary. The coordinators of the RNSP are: Sholem Klein, Shmuel Kassover and Elkanah Adelman.
During his two-hour ride along with the RNSP, Sanders accompanied Klein and Kassover as they drove around looking for any suspicious or criminal activity. Things were pretty quiet with the exception of an incident involving an emotionally disturbed person having to be removed from a city bus by police in front of the 101st Precinct and taken away by ambulance.
The RNSP is available to assist residents at all times of the day or night and can be reached via their 24-hour hotline at 917-727-7306.
