Statement From Senator Elaine Phillips
February 28, 2018
Like all Americans, I am shocked at the number of school shootings taking place across our country. As a mother of three daughters, I am outraged and saddened by the regular acts of senseless violence occurring in our schools and elsewhere.
My colleagues and I in the Senate Republican Majority are working tirelessly on a comprehensive school safety plan. We all want our schools to be places that foster education, creativity and opportunities.
I will leave the politics of this issue to others, my only focus is finding solutions that will bring about real change, and keep our children safe. These initiatives will include more funding for on-site school security, enhancing response plans and addressing the mental health issue, which seems to be the root of many of these violent acts.
Over the past few weeks, I have been in contact with numerous parents, school administrators and law enforcement officials and welcome their valuable input. We will act in the very near future on this comprehensive legislation to prevent school violence.
