April 22, 2019
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Through its Power to Serve initiative to engage and volunteer in the local communities, National Grid employee volunteers partnered with Prospect Park Alliance and New York City Department of Parks and Recreation for Earth Day 2019.
About 75 volunteers helped to keep the park green and clean by sanding and painting park fencing and benches, weeding, pruning and cleaning up tree beds. The activities in Prospect Park, Brooklyn’s flagship park, are just one of the ways in which National Grid is doing its part to give back to the communities it serves.
“I am proud of our employees who bring a tremendous amount of commitment and enthusiasm to Earth Day activities,” said Melanie Littlejohn, Vice President, National Grid New York. “We are proud to partner with Prospect Park to make a positive and lasting contribution to essential green space for the Brooklyn community.”
New York State Senator Kevin Parker helped kick off the Earth Day event, delivering remarks and presenting the volunteers with a proclamation for their commitment to stewardship.
“As the Chair of the Energy & Telecommunications Committee I am proud to see National Grid and their employees understand the importance of protecting the environment and maintaining local landmarks such as Prospect Park,” said Senator Parker. “I look forward to continuing our work together to ensure constituents in my community have an opportunity to be involved and work alongside companies like National Grid to keep our community clean.”
The Prospect Park Alliance and NYC Parks are dedicated to keeping the park green and vibrant for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home. Prospect Park is an international model for the care of urban parks, and one of the premier green spaces in the United States.
“Prospect Park Alliance believes that Earth Day is a wonderful opportunity to come together to make a true environmental impact,” said Sue Donoghue, President, Prospect Park Alliance. “National Grid came out in full force on Tuesday, helping to beautify and maintain the southwest perimeter of Prospect Park. The Alliance is extremely grateful for this important work, as we rely on help from our partners to keep this treasured resource vital and green for all.”
