Senator Parker Expresses Strong Opposition To Decostole Carting INC. Expansion
Brooklyn, NY - State Senator Kevin Parker has expressed his firm opposition to the continued operation and proposed facility reconfigurations at Decostole Carting Inc., located at 1481 Troy Avenue in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Senator Parker's office has received numerous calls of concern from residents regarding the potential environmental and health risks associated with the facility, which is situated near PS/I.S. 109 and within a residential community.
The primary concerns raised by the community include the improper handling of demolition debris and material recovery processes, which pose significant risks to the environment and human health. In January 2025, government officials reached out to community members to better understand the issues surrounding this project. Despite these efforts, Senator Parker highlighted that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) failed to properly engage with local stakeholders, including community organizations, residents, and elected officials. Furthermore, a lack of proper outreach regarding public meetings underscores the failure to adhere to DEC’s Policy 29, which mandates enhanced public participation in environmental justice matters.
"In an era where transparency, accountability, and community engagement are paramount, the lack of official outreach regarding this project is deeply concerning," said Senator Parker. "We are committed to ensuring the health and safety of our community, especially in areas like East Flatbush, which has historically faced environmental injustices. The continued operation and expansion of Decostole Carting Inc. without full public conversation is unacceptable."
In light of these unresolved issues and the continued pattern of harm to the community, Senator Parker supports the following immediate actions:
· A meeting with the Department of Environmental Conservation and elected leadership to discuss the community's concerns and ensure full compliance with environmental justice laws and
· A halt to Decostole Carting Inc.'s proposed expansion until all human and environmental health concerns are adequately addressed and resolved.
Senator Parker vowed to continue advocating on behalf of his constituents to ensure that their voices are heard and that safety is prioritized. "If these necessary steps are not taken, there will be no choice but to request a formal denial of the continuation of this project," stated Senator Parker. The health and well-being of our community must always come first."
