(Garden City, NY) – Senator Kevin Thomas (D-Levittown) will hold a public hearing on the NY Privacy Act (S-5642), which aims to protect the privacy of New York’s social media and online users.
The hearing is a joint effort between the Consumer Protection Committee & Internet and Technology Committee to conduct discussion on online privacy and the role of the New York State Legislature in its oversight.
Social media companies routinely capture users’ personal information, which can be shared or sold to external parties without the user’s consent. The NY Privacy Act would require social media companies to disclose their methods for gathering personal information and allow consumers to find out what companies have access to their personal data.
