Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) recently held a Shed the Meds event where he partnered with Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and the Half Hollow Hills Library to help protect our community from dangerous medication. The event, which took place on Saturday, July 24th, resulted in the collection of two full boxes of unwanted medication to be disposed of by the Sheriff’s Office.
Shed the Meds events are an important way to provide for safe disposal of unwanted medications. Safe disposal helps protect the environment and keeps medications out of the hands of young children or others who would use them improperly.
“It is amazing to see the enormous amount of participation and support our Shed the Meds program received from the community,” said Senator Mattera. “To think we were able to collect two full boxes of expired and unused medication is truly remarkable. It is important for us to properly dispose of these types of pharmaceuticals because other manners of disposal can contaminate our water supply or lead to these substances falling into the wrong hands. Thank you again to all our local partners and neighbors for their continued participation and support.”
Senator Mattera will be hosting another Shed the Meds event on Friday, October 22nd in conjunction with the Hauppauge Fire Department and The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. This special event will be at the Hauppauge Volunteer Fire Department, which is located at 855 Wheeler Road in Hauppauge.
For those seeking to drop off medications prior to October 22nd, Suffolk County Police Department will accept unwanted drugs at any of their precincts as part of their Operation Medicine Cabinet effort. Any drop offs are completely anonymous and can be done at precincts, including the Fourth Precinct at 727 Vets Hwy in Hauppauge and the Sixth Precinct at 400 Middle Country Rd. in Selden, 24 hours a day.
