ALBANY, NY (September 2, 2021) – State Senator Michelle Hinchey (SD-46) issued the following statement today on Texas's abortion law, S.B. 8:
"By way of silence, the Supreme Court this week effectively struck down Roe v. Wade. Their inaction on the new Texas law, which bans abortion as early as six weeks — a point before many women even know they’re pregnant — is an affront to women everywhere and sets a supremely dangerous precedent. It also sets a bounty on the head of anyone who knowingly, or unknowingly, helps a woman exercise her constitutional right. It’s not hyperbole to say we’re in a fight for the future of our country.
"State legislatures matter.
"Here in New York, we vow to protect a woman’s right to choose, a woman’s right to consider her future, and a woman’s right to protect herself from the fallout of rape or incest.
"As Americans, we have to do better. We owe it to the millions of young girls and women waking up to the news this week, scared of what lies ahead."
