Garden City, NY (March 7, 2022) — Following New York Attorney General Letitia James’ release of the state’s top 10 consumer complaints reported in 2021, State Senator Kevin Thomas (D-Levittown), Chair of the Senate Consumer Protection Committee, issued the following statement:
“As New Yorkers rely more and more on technology to work, shop, and stay connected, it’s more important than ever that our consumer protections keep pace with our rapidly changing world. During the pandemic, we have seen a substantial rise in bad actors seeking to take advantage of us by exploiting our personal data and invading our digital privacy online. Internet Data Privacy and Security was ranked number one on the New York Attorney General’s List of Top Consumer Complaints in 2021, with over 8,000 complaints filed.
New Yorkers should not have to sacrifice their safety or privacy when engaging in the digital world. As Chair of Consumer Protection, I will continue to fight for the rights of consumers by advocating for the passage of the New York Privacy Act, which will give New Yorkers the strongest data privacy protections in the nation. I urge every New Yorker to stand with me and contact their State representatives and tell them to support the passage of the New York Privacy Act, S6701A/A680B.”
