Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C, Elma) announces the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is once again in the process of recruiting correction officers. Interested individuals must apply for evaluation online at the New York State Department of Civil Service’s website and complete the online questionnaire. The filing deadline is September 15.
“The state is looking for the best candidates possible to serve in correctional facilities across New York and I encourage men and women who are interested to apply,” Senator Gallivan said.
“As a former State Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, I can attest that CO’s play a critical role in law enforcement. It is a challenging job, but also a very rewarding career.”
Correction officers are responsible for the custody, security, safety and well-being of criminal offenders and must supervise their movement and activities while maintaining order within the correctional facility. A correction officer Trainee’s starting salary is currently $46,626 per year. After six months, the salary increases to $49,043. After successful completion of the one-year traineeship, the salary increases to $56,158 per year.
While there is no minimum age requirement to take the exam, you must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Applicants must be a high school graduate and a citizen of the United States.
Additional information about the position of correction officer is also available at the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision website.
