New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins highlighted the importance of affordable housing for seniors at the ribbon cutting for La Mora Senior Apartments, a new 60-unit affordable housing community in South Yonkers’ Hollow neighborhood. The state approved over $26 million in funding for the La Mora complex. The complex offers modern, energy-efficient apartments for seniors 62 and older. Residents will have access to numerous amenities, including services from the Yonkers Office for the Aging.
“Affordable senior housing is a necessity, and public-private partnerships between government, our local municipalities and developers are so important to meeting the housing needs of our communities,” Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins said. “That partnership is what we have here with La Mora. We have identified a need here in Yonkers, and the state joined with the federal government and the City of Yonkers to bring this project to fruition to address that need.”
Building affordable housing, and in this case senior housing, is important across the state, especially Westchester County, where one in five residents is a senior. At 17 percent, Yonkers has a higher percentage of senior citizens than any other city in the state, including New York City. One in four seniors, especially those living on low- or fixed-incomes, are at risk of homelessness, Sen. Stewart-Cousins said – a risk state leaders are committed to alleviating.
In the last five years, the New York State Division of Homes and Community Renewal (HCR) has created or preserved 4,500 affordable homes in Westchester County. Speaking at the ribbon cutting at La Mora, Sen. Stewart-Cousins hailed the historic $25 billion housing plan she helped secure through the 2024-25 state budget, directing HCR to build or preserve 100,000 affordable homes across New York.
“It’s great to come together to commit to make sure that housing is not only built, but that we target what our communities need – so much of what our communities need is affordable housing,” Sen. Stewart-Cousins said. “We don’t mind doing the hard work, and we understand that when we explain to communities what is needed, it becomes popular. That’s why we were able to do a housing deal this year, preserving affordability and building to create even greater affordability.”
