May 2, 2024
(BINGHAMTON, NY) – Last month, Senator Lea Webb and Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo passed a resolution in the New York State Legislature commemorating the life and enduring legacy of Billie D. Anderson (K02003/J2210), a revered community leader and advocate. The resolution was adopted in both legislative houses, marking a profound acknowledgment of Ms. Anderson’s impact in our community. Senator Webb and Assemblywoman Lupardo were joined in the State Capitol by members of Ms. Anderson's family to celebrate the passage of the resolution.
Billie D. Anderson, who passed away on July 23, 2023 at the age of 91, was a beacon of justice and an impassioned advocate for the underserved. Born in the South and relocating to Binghamton in 1945, she faced significant challenges and discrimination, which spurred her into action—transforming the Binghamton School Board by advocating for diversity in its staffing, and organizing initiatives against racism in education, employment, and criminal justice. Her relentless pursuit of equality and her role as a major force in revitalizing local civil rights activities, including her work with Opportunities for Broome, highlighted her as a formidable advocate for the disenfranchised. Billie D. Anderson also demonstrated deep commitment to her faith and her family, inspiring not just her own children but countless others in the community to stand up for their beliefs. Her legacy continues to inspire those who strive for a fairer and more just society.
"In honoring Billie D. Anderson, we remember a woman whose life was not defined by the challenges she faced, but by the obstacles she overcame," said Senator Lea Webb. "Her tireless advocacy and unwavering courage have left an indelible mark on our community, teaching us that one person's voice can indeed make a profound difference. Billie taught us to fight for justice with both passion and dignity, and to always stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Her spirit will forever guide us as we continue to fight for a world that reflects the values she embodied every day of her remarkable life."
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo said, “I was honored to join Senator Webb in recognizing the life of Billie D. Anderson, a community icon and role model. She was a prominent civil rights leader who devoted her life to empowering those around her. Her enduring legacy will continue to inform and inspire many future generations to come. Every interaction I had with her was a valuable learning experience, helping to shape my own views on the fight for justice. I am glad that members of Billie Anderson’s family could be present to receive the Joint Legislative Resolution that was passed in her honor.”
