Fresh Meadows, NY - Today, more than 200 runners, walkers, and environmental enthusiasts joined State Senator John Liu for an Earth Day Fun Run, a 5K celebration of parks, greenways, and environmental conservation in Kissena Corridor and Cunningham parks.
The first 100 runners received free t-shirts while others walked away with tabletop compost bins from Queens Botanical Gardens and hip bags from New York Road Runners. Alley Pond Environmental Center provided interactive displays, with bird nests, feathers, animal pelts, a turtle carapace, and even provided live Madagascar hissing cockroaches that helped inspire extra speed for many runners.
Senator Liu called attention to the need for stronger, safer, and more connected park pathways across Queens and Long Island. The event took place on the Long Island Motor Parkway, which is the focus of Senator Liu’s legislation, S4484, calling for a study on extending the parkway to connect with the Brooklyn Queens Greenway and Empire State Trail.
State Senator John Liu stated, “Thank you to everyone who came out to run, walk, skip and sprint with us in celebration of Earth Day. We came together to enjoy and explore the historic Long Island Motor Parkway path in Kissena Corridor and Cunningham parks, and look forward to a time when we can extend these vital pathways even further throughout Queens and Long Island.”
Additional cosponsors include the New York Road Runners, Jamaica Estates Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Korean Road Runners Club, Cup Zero, NYC Parks & Recreation, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, Eastern Queens Greenway, Queens Botanical Garden, Alley Pond Environmental Center, Korean American Association of Queens, and Kissena Synergy.
