STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The father of a Staten Island lawyer who was shot to death while on vacation in Chile shared a touching tribute he penned about his son a year after the slaying.

The younger Garvin, who was known as Gene, was innocently taking a photo of a building in a crime-infested area of Santiago when he was set upon by three unknown men who shot and killed him, his father previously told the Advance/SILive.com.

In May, the New York State Legislature in Albany honored Gene’s life with a proclamation on the floor of the Assembly and Senate. Assemblyman Charles Fall (D-North Shore) and state Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn) co-sponsored the honor for the life and humanitarian work of the slain lawyer, who was an advocate against gun violence in New York City.
