STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — An executive order and bills package Gov. Kathy Hochul signed Monday aims to honor and support those who served the country.

Five bills announced Monday will also extend benefits to more veterans and provide better services within state agencies.

One bill sponsored by State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/Southern Brooklyn) will make all veterans who served 4 years and reside in the state eligible for the Veterans Tuition Award, which provides access to higher education opportunities. Previously, the award had only been available to combat veterans.

Scarcella-Spanton, chair of the Senate‘s Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, sponsored two other bill supporting veterans.

One requires all state agencies to have a veterans’ liaison and another will provide automatic information on veterans’ benefits to all people with a veteran notation on their state driver’s license or non-driver identification card.

"As Chair of the Committee on Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs, I am honored and privileged to fight for our veterans in the State Senate the way they’ve fought for us," Scarcella-Spanton said. "Each and every day we need to continue to honor the legacy of those who served our country and pay homage to their dedication and sacrifices for safety and freedom.”
