Local legislator introduces 5 bills to support New York’s veterans
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The hundreds of thousands of military veterans who call New York home could soon have a host of new resources at their disposal thanks to one of Staten Island’s state legislators.
State Sen. Jessica Scarcella-Spanton (D-North Shore/South Brooklyn), who serves as the chair of the state Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, announced that the committee passed six bills, five of which were introduced by the senator, during its first meeting of the 2025 legislative session.
“As the wife of a combat veteran, this role is deeply personal to me. I understand the sacrifices our military men and women make every day, and I am committed to making sure they have the resources, support, and recognition they deserve,” said Scarcella-Spanton.
“Advancing legislation that will make a real difference in the lives of our veterans, active-duty military personnel, and their families is a responsibility I do not take lightly. Being trusted with this position for a second term is an incredible honor, and I am ready to build on the momentum we’ve established, making sure that the needs of our service members and veterans remain at the forefront throughout the 2025 legislative session,” Scarcella-Spanton said.
