Whedon-Schumacher House has been Nominated by State Board for Historic Preservation to be added the State and National Register for Historic Places

Syracuse, NY - Senator Rachel May (SD-53) is proud to announce that the State Board for Historic Preservation has nominated the Whedon-Schumacher House, on West Onondaga Street, to be added to the State and National Register for Historic Places. The State Board nominated 17 locations across New York -- the Whedon-Schumacher House is the only nomination from Central New York.

Built in 1892, the Queen Anne-style residence was designed by architect Archimedes Russell, one of the city’s most influential local designers. In 1921, the first floor of the house was converted for use as a funeral home.

Buildings that are listed on the State and National Registers are eligible for various public preservation programs and services -- such as matching state grants or state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits -- to assist property owners in maintaining and revitalizing the buildings.

“As a member of the Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks And Recreation Committee, I am excited to see the recognition of one of Syracuse’s historic buildings,” said Senator May. “Preservation and revitalization of these landmarks helps us ensure that future generations have access to our history and can see first-hand the legacy of New Yorkers. It is also great to see such a diverse selection of nominees across the state which can provide a robust view of New York’s past.”
