NY Senate Declares Mar. 22 – Apr. 21, as Ramadan, the month of fasting for the Muslim community, in the State of New York
(Albany, NY) — Today, the New York State Senate unanimously adopted a resolution introduced by Senator Kevin Thomas commemorating Ramadan by declaring Mar. 22 – Apr. 21, as Ramadan in the State of New York. This resolution recognizes the significance of the holiday as the holiest month in the Islamic calendar and is observed starting March 23, 2023 to April 21, 2023. Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. The community has a daily period of fasting, nightly prayers at the Mosque, provide charity and read the Quran. This resolution details the practices of Ramadan and highlights the power of the last ten days.
Senator Kevin Thomas said, “I am proud to introduce this Resolution commemorating Ramadan as the holy month comes to a close, and send our warm wishes to the Muslim community of the State of New York. During this time of self-reflection, we must come together to embrace the spirit of community and unity and highlight the rich cultural heritage and diversity of our neighbors. Thank you, Imam Karkour, for taking the time to come to the Capitol and delivering such a meaningful opening invocation.”
Joining Senator Thomas in the Chambers were members of the Masjid As-Salam Mosque in Albany, including Imam Ahmad Karkour who delivered the opening invocation at the opening of today’s session.
